This year’s tournament will be introducing Discovery Center’s new Executive Director, Melissa Edwards
A lifelong fan of education and history, Melissa became a space nut during her tenure as an education director at The Museum of Flight in Seattle. As a non-profit executive with more than 15 years at the helm of educational programs, she has dedicated her career to the advancement of aerospace and STEM education sectors. Her time at The Museum of Flight was marked by significant achievements, including the founding of The Boeing Academy for STEM Learning and a state-of-the-art Digital Learning Department. At Blue Origin, she was tasked with an exciting challenge: to invigorate an internship program that not only met the high technical standards of an emerging leader in space exploration but also embodied the principles of diversity and inclusion.
Prior to working in the museum and private space sectors, she spent nine years as an educator in a variety of settings including an elementary school on the island of Saipan and the Academy of the Pacific Rim charter public school in Boston. She was a Boston Campus Director for the nationally recognized Citizen Schools program and led a team to provide Boston Public middle school students academic support, leadership development, and "apprenticeships"—hands-on projects taught by volunteers from business and civic organizations.
She earned both her BA and Masters in Teaching degrees from The Evergreen State College in Olympia, Washington. In addition to living abroad for many years, Melissa was selected by the Fulbright Memorial Foundation to spend three weeks in Japan examining the educational system from kindergarten to the post-secondary level.
She counts herself incredibly fortunate to be able to join the amazing team at the McAuliffe-Shepard Discovery Center and to continue to share the stories of two inspirational New Hampshire space heroes.
